The new version of the Zephyr has six strings and is played with a bow. The body is an old lap steel (literally made of steel).

The Tri-Cello#2 is another dulcimer based cello project that was a commission for BT in California. Also has a built-in harmonizer.

This is the latest version of the Holocaster. Two piezo pick-up elements and a built in amp and speaker. I'm using a combination of classical strings (bass) and Super-bullets (treble) for a very unique (and deliciously atonal) twang. The round vent hole in the center of the body has a circle of blinking red lights. |
The Tri-Cello is a three-stringed device I built out of an old mountain dulcimer. Piezo pick-up with volume control and guitar tuners. It also has a mic stand adaptor on the back so you can mount it on a stand a play it standing up if you want.

The Upright Hammered Spring Bass is built from an old lamp, a snowmobile drive cog, curtain rod springs, milliamp meter, octave divider, electric eye lens, electro-luminescent wire and transducers. |
Detail of bridge and bottom.

The Atomic AutoHarp was a commision for Shawn in California- heavy metal hootinanny for the masses! I particularly like the diamond plate under the strings. The "Special" emblem is off of an old Buick. I also built a couple of fx units for him so that this can be plugged into some serious distortion, delay and flange! WhoooHooo! |
The Newport Custom is my own modified zither. I was inspired by the Autoharp commission so much, I just had to build this thing. I play it with rubber mallets. Sounds like a cross between a prepared piano and a hammered dulcimer. Too much fun! |

The New Metal Violin is made out of the battery compartment from a minesweeper. I flipped the string order around and changed to an open D tuning of sorts. Excellent ambient drone material! |

The Electro-Cello is a tape bow device; it's kind of a primitive form of sampling. You pre-record a short piece of magnetic tape, attach it to some kind of bow and run it across the "head" on the cello. Chris Prudhomme and I built the original version of this almost 20 years ago! (you can tell by that first picture...) |
The SpringHarp is a sturdy wooden frame with more curtain rod springs stretched between cup hooks. Once again the trusty piezo turns this into a mondo sound generator. Sounds really cool through a tape delay! |
